What They Don't Tell You
This isn't speculation. These are documented facts from news outlets, court filings, and the companies' own admissions. Every device below is something millions of people have in their homes right now.
Teams of employees and contractors across the US, Costa Rica, India, and Romania listen to up to 1,000 audio clips per shift captured from Echo devices in people's homes. Reviewers have overheard people singing in the shower, children screaming, and what they believed was a sexual assault. Recordings were sometimes shared in internal chat rooms. Amazon settled for $25 million over allegations that 30,000 employees had access to users' conversations.
Bloomberg via TIME, 2019 Reader's Digest, 2024In 2022, Amazon confirmed Ring gave police 11 videos without notifying users or requiring warrants, claiming "emergency" circumstances. Over 2,000 police departments had access to request footage through Ring's Neighbors app. In 2025, Ring reversed its own privacy policy and partnered with Axon and Flock Safety, a nationwide license plate surveillance network, to reinstate police access to user footage.
NPR, 2024 Black Enterprise, 2025 EFF, 2024Google has discontinued the Nest Secure alarm system, Nest Protect, Nest x Yale Lock, Nest Cam IQ, and Dropcam Pro. In 2016, they remotely bricked every Revolv smart hub, turning purchased hardware into paperweights. The "lifetime subscription" turned out to mean the lifetime of the device, which they chose to end. First and second generation Nest thermostats lost all smart features in October 2025. Users who paid hundreds of dollars were offered a discount on a replacement.
Wikipedia: Google Nest Google Support, 2025 Tom's Guide, 2025Smart thermostats log temperature changes every few seconds, track your phone's location through geofencing, and record motion patterns in five-minute intervals. They know your sleep schedule, your daily routines, and your energy habits plotted at 15-minute intervals. Some manufacturers run "Donate Your Data" programs that collect motion data for public health surveillance research.
Gadget Review, 2025Smart plugs collect energy usage data, appliance usage patterns, and on/off schedules. The one controlling the lamp next to your bed knows when you go to sleep and when you wake up. The one in your living room knows when you're home and when you're not. Manufacturers use this data to build profiles of your daily routines, which can be sold to third-party advertisers or used for targeted ads. IoT security researchers have found that many devices phone home to external servers far more frequently than users realize.
LinkedIn Security Discussion, 2024What Haven Does Differently
Haven is built on open-source software that processes everything locally. No cloud servers, no data harvesting, no third-party access. You own the hardware, you own the data, and nobody can take it away from you.
Everything runs on your equipment. No cloud, no company copies. Internet goes down? Still works. Because it was never dependent on someone else's servers in the first place.
We charge for our time. No data selling, no ads, no hidden fees. We publish where every dollar goes. See the full breakdown.
If you leave Haven, you keep everything. Equipment, setup, configurations. We'd rather lose a customer than trap one. That's not a slogan, it's the architecture.
