What They Don't Tell You

Your smart home is reporting on you.

These aren't theories. Every item below is documented by news outlets, court filings, or the companies' own admissions. Tap any headline to read the details.

01 Amazon employees listen to your Alexa recordings. Thousands of workers. Up to 1,000 clips per shift. In your bedroom.

Teams of employees and contractors across the US, Costa Rica, India, and Romania listen to audio clips captured from Echo devices in people's homes. Reviewers have overheard intimate moments, children screaming, and what they believed was a sexual assault. Recordings were sometimes shared in internal chat rooms. Amazon settled for $25 million over allegations that 30,000 employees had access to users' conversations.

Even if you opt out of their "improvement program," Amazon says your recordings may still be analyzed by hand in the normal review process. Your voice data is stored indefinitely unless you manually delete it.

02 Ring handed your doorbell footage to police. Then lied about stopping. 2,000+ police departments. No warrants. And in 2025, they reversed the "fix."

In 2022, Amazon confirmed Ring gave police 11 videos without notifying users or requiring warrants, citing "emergency" circumstances. Over 2,000 police departments had access to request footage through Ring's Neighbors app. After massive backlash, Ring announced in early 2024 they would stop allowing police to request footage from users.

Then in 2025, Ring quietly reversed that decision. They partnered with Axon and Flock Safety — a nationwide license plate surveillance network — to reinstate police access to user footage. The "privacy win" lasted about a year.

03 Google killed your smart home products. On purpose. Bricked hardware. Forced obsolescence. A discount on your replacement.

Google has discontinued the Nest Secure alarm system, Nest Protect, Nest x Yale Lock, Nest Cam IQ, and Dropcam Pro. In 2016, they remotely bricked every Revolv smart hub, turning purchased hardware into paperweights overnight. The "lifetime subscription" turned out to mean the lifetime of the device — which they chose to end.

First and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats lost all smart features in October 2025. Users who paid hundreds of dollars were offered a discount on buying a replacement from the same company that just killed their old one.

04 Your thermostat maps your daily life in 15-minute intervals. Sleep schedule. Room usage. Energy habits. Shared with "research partners."

Smart thermostats log temperature changes every few seconds, track your phone's location through geofencing, and record motion patterns in five-minute intervals. They know your sleep schedule, your daily routines, and your energy habits plotted at 15-minute intervals. Some manufacturers run "Donate Your Data" programs that collect motion data for public health surveillance research.

05 That smart plug knows when you sleep. It controls your lamp. It also profiles your entire routine for advertisers.

The smart plug on your bedside lamp knows when you go to sleep and when you wake up. The one in your living room knows when you're home and when you're not. Manufacturers use this data to build profiles of your daily routines, which can be sold to third-party advertisers or used for targeted ads. IoT researchers have found that many devices phone home to external servers far more frequently than users realize — often every few minutes.

You bought a plug to turn on a lamp. You got a surveillance device that profiles your sleeping habits and sells the pattern to the highest bidder.

These aren't data breaches. These aren't bugs. This is how these products were designed to work. The entire business model depends on knowing everything about your life — and you agreed to it in a terms of service document you never read.

Now think about where this goes next. Every behavioral pattern these companies have extracted from hundreds of millions of homes is now feeding AI systems being trained at a scale humans have never attempted. Systems designed not just to predict what you'll do, but to nudge you toward doing what someone else wants. Buy this. Watch that. Fear them. Vote here.

The developers building these models may not fully grasp what they're constructing. But the economics are simple: the more intimate the data, the more accurate the model, the more valuable the influence. Your bedroom lamp data trains the same pipeline as your search history, your purchase patterns, your location, your face. And the output isn't a product that serves you. It's a profile that moves you.

Your smart home was supposed to make life easier. Instead, it's becoming the most intimate surveillance infrastructure ever built — and it's already inside your house, your bedroom, your child's room. The data is already collected. The models are already training. The only question left is whether you keep feeding them.

What Haven Does Differently

Everything runs in your home. Nothing leaves.

Haven is built on open-source software that processes everything locally. No cloud servers, no data harvesting, no third-party access. You own the hardware, you own the data, and nobody can take it away from you.

Your Data Stays Home

Everything runs on your equipment. No cloud, no company copies. Internet goes down? Still works. Because it was never dependent on someone else's servers in the first place.

We Make Money Honestly

We charge for our time. No data selling, no ads, no hidden fees. We publish where every dollar goes. See the full breakdown.

No Lock-In. Ever.

If you leave Haven, you keep everything. Equipment, setup, configurations. We'd rather lose a customer than trap one. That's not a slogan, it's the architecture.
